The GUHRING 9039440079380 is a thread forming tap designed for creating internal threads without cutting chips, making it well suited for blind hole and through-hole threading applications. Built from High-Speed Steel-E-CO (cobalt-enhanced HSS) and coated with TiCN for extended tool life, this tap carries a 5/16-24 UNF thread form with a 2BX class of fit. It features a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 3 chamfered threads, allowing threading close to the bottom of a blind hole. With an overall length of 2.72 inches and a tapping depth of 1.378 inches, it fits standard tap holders used in production and maintenance machining environments. Licensed machinists and tool-and-die professionals are the primary users.
This tap is rated for use in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and non-ferrous metals, corresponding to material application codes P, M, K, and N. Its flute-by-diameter ratio of 3xD and five oil grooves support controlled lubrication during the forming process, making it appropriate for both CNC tapping centers and manual drill press operations in job shop, maintenance, and production settings. The right-hand thread direction aligns with standard tooling conventions. It is part of the GUHRING Series 3944 program for thread forming taps.
Designed for use in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and non-ferrous metal workpieces requiring 5/16-24 UNF internal threads with a 2BX class of fit. Compatible with standard tap holders and tapping chucks accepting a 0.318-inch shank diameter.
Thread forming taps are installed by machinists and tool-and-die technicians using CNC tapping centers, drill presses, or tapping arms with appropriate torque control. Always use a thread forming lubricant or tapping fluid rated for the workpiece material to prevent galling, particularly in stainless steel. Ensure the tap is aligned perpendicular to the workpiece surface before engagement. Verify spindle speed and feed rate match the manufacturer recommendations for the workpiece material and tap diameter before running.
