The GUHRING 9039440035050 is a thread forming tap designed for cold-forming internal threads in ductile materials without cutting. Manufactured from High-Speed Steel-E-CO (cobalt-alloyed HSS) and finished with a TiCN coating, this tap delivers increased surface hardness and lubricity for extended tool life in demanding tapping operations. It produces 6-40 UNF right-hand threads to a 2BX class of fit with an H5/H6 thread limit. The modified bottoming chamfer, with 2 to 3 chamfered threads, allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes. Overall length is 2 inches, thread length is 0.4724 inches, and tapping depth reaches 0.7480 inches. Licensed machinists and tool-and-die tradespeople are the primary users of this tap.
This tap is suited for blind-hole and through-hole threading in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and non-ferrous metals. It carries material application codes P, M, K, and N, covering a broad range of ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials. The Series 3944 design incorporates four oil grooves to support lubrication during the forming process. It is commonly used in precision machining, fixture fabrication, and production tapping where thread-forming rather than thread-cutting is specified to improve thread strength and surface finish.
Designed for use in blind-hole and through-hole applications requiring a 6-40 UNF internal thread in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and non-ferrous metal workpieces. Compatible with standard tapping chucks and holders accepting a 0.1410-inch shank diameter with a 0.1100-inch square drive.
Thread forming taps require adequate lubrication or cutting fluid matched to the workpiece material. Ensure the tap is properly aligned with the pre-drilled forming hole before engagement, as misalignment will damage the tap and distort the thread form. Always use a tapping chuck or torque-limiting holder to prevent tap breakage, particularly in blind-hole applications. Follow OSHA and shop-specific machine guarding requirements when operating drilling or milling equipment.
