The GUHRING 9039420080000 is a thread forming tap designed for M8x1.25 metric coarse threading in blind and through-hole applications. Built from High-Speed Steel-E-CO (cobalt-enriched HSS) and finished with a TiCN coating, this tap generates threads by displacing material rather than cutting chips, producing stronger thread forms with superior surface finish. It carries a 6HX class of fit and features a modified bottoming chamfer with 2 to 3 chamfered threads, making it well-suited for applications requiring threads close to the bottom of a blind hole. Overall length is 2.721 inches, thread length is 0.669 inches, and the tool weighs 0.1 pounds.
This tap is intended for use in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and non-ferrous metals, covering ISO material groups P, M, K, and N. It is appropriate for production and maintenance threading operations across automotive, aerospace, and general metalworking environments. The modified bottoming geometry suits situations where full thread engagement depth in a blind hole is required. Right-hand thread direction and a 3xD flute-to-diameter ratio are standard for this Series 3942 tool. Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill — the recommended hole diameter differs from a standard cutting tap pilot hole and must be confirmed before use. Apply an appropriate tapping fluid or oil consistently throughout the forming operation; the five oil grooves on this tap depend on adequate lubrication to prevent galling, especially in stainless steel. Secure the workpiece and use a calibrated tapping fixture or CNC rigid tapping cycle to maintain axial alignment. Follow applicable shop safety practices and machine manufacturer guidelines when setting spindle speed and feed rate for forming taps.
