The GUHRING 9039400190500 is a thread forming tap in the Series 3940 line, designed for producing internal threads without cutting chips. It operates by cold-forming material rather than removing it, which results in stronger thread walls and eliminates chip evacuation concerns. Built from High-Speed Steel-E-CO (cobalt-enhanced HSS) and finished with a Titanium Nitride (TiN) coating, it handles demanding materials including steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and non-ferrous metals. The tap covers a 3/4-10 UNC thread specification with a 2BX class of fit and a modified bottoming chamfer of 2 to 3 threads, making it well-suited for both blind hole and through-hole threading applications.
This tap is used in production and maintenance machining environments where thread strength and hole cleanliness are priorities. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of blind holes than a standard plug tap, while still providing sufficient lead-in for alignment. It is rated for use across material categories P (steel), M (stainless steel), K (cast iron), and N (non-ferrous metals), making it a versatile choice in job shop, aerospace, automotive, and industrial manufacturing settings. Licensed machinists and toolroom technicians are the typical installers.
Designed for blind hole and through-hole threading in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and non-ferrous metals. Fits standard 3/4-10 UNC toolholding setups accepting a 0.590-inch shank diameter with a 0.442-inch square drive.
Thread forming taps require adequate lubrication or cutting fluid rated for the workpiece material — dry forming is not recommended for steel or stainless steel applications. Ensure the spindle speed and torque settings on the tapping machine or CNC are appropriate for the tap diameter and workpiece material before starting. Secure the tap in a rigid holder to maintain axial alignment and prevent tap breakage. Always confirm the pre-drill hole size meets the recommended forming tap minor diameter for the 3/4-10 UNC specification before tapping.
