The GUHRING 9017020055000 is a screw machine length solid carbide drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in demanding materials. Built to DIN 6539 standards, it carries a 5.50 mm (0.2165 inches) diameter with a TiN coating for improved wear resistance and surface hardness. The 140-degree split-point (SF) geometry reduces thrust and walking at entry, making it well suited for controlled, repeatable hole-making on the shop floor or in the field. The web-thinned, tapered web configuration further reduces cutting forces at the tip. This bit is installed and operated by machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and precision fabricators working with tight-tolerance applications.
This drill bit is built for cutting stainless steel as its primary workpiece material, where tool hardness and edge retention are critical. The screw machine length — shorter overall length compared to a jobber bit — provides added rigidity and reduced deflection in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and turret lathes. The 3xD flute-to-diameter ratio and regular spiral flute geometry promote consistent chip evacuation in short-chipping and stringy materials alike. It performs in both production and maintenance-repair-operations environments where stainless steel components are regularly machined.
Designed as a DIN 6539 Series 1702 screw machine length drill bit for use in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and turret lathes where a straight-cylindrical shank and short-length rigid body are required. Primary workpiece material is stainless steel.
Install in a matching straight-shank collet or drill chuck rated for the 5.50 mm shank diameter; verify runout before engaging the cut. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling — stainless steel work-hardens rapidly if the bit dwells without cutting. Do not exceed the maximum drilling depth of 0.778 inches (19.75 mm) per the flute geometry. Always power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing tooling, following applicable shop safety and OSHA lockout-tagout procedures.
