The GREENFIELD 949-18 is a steel stud protector plate, also known as a nail plate, designed to shield pipes and electrical wiring routed through wall studs. Once fastened over a drilled or notched stud, it creates a hard barrier that prevents nails, screws, and fasteners driven during drywall installation from puncturing or damaging the lines behind it. The plate measures 2.95 inches by 18 inches with a low-profile height of 0.1 inches, and features 16 pre-punched holes for secure, flush mounting. Plumbers, electricians, and general contractors install these plates as a standard code-compliance step before drywall goes up.
The 949-18 is suited for residential and light commercial framing applications where supply lines, drain lines, or low-voltage and line-voltage wiring pass through wood or metal studs close to the stud face. The 18-inch length provides extended coverage along taller notch runs or multiple penetrations stacked vertically. Its compact, flat profile fits flush against the stud face without creating interference with drywall panels or insulation batts.
Designed as an OEM-style stud protector plate for standard wood and metal framing applications where pipes or wiring run through or near the face of wall studs.
Nail plates are typically installed by licensed plumbers or electricians after lines are run and before drywall is hung. Position the plate over the pipe or wire location so it fully covers the exposed area on the stud face, then fasten through the pre-punched holes using appropriate fasteners for the framing material. Many local building codes based on the IPC, IFGC, and NEC require nail plate protection when pipes or wires run within a minimum distance of the stud face — verify local code requirements before installation. No special tools beyond a hammer or screw gun are typically required.
