The GREENFIELD 920-3 is a steel nail plate and stud protector designed to shield plumbing, electrical, and HVAC lines routed through wood framing members. Installed directly over notched or bored studs, joists, or plates, this protector plate acts as a barrier against fastener penetration from drywall screws, nails, and staples driven after rough-in work is complete. The 920-3 measures 1.5 inches in width by 3 inches in length and is constructed of steel, providing a durable, code-compliant layer of protection over concealed lines. Plumbers, electricians, and mechanical contractors install these plates as a standard part of rough-in inspections.
Nail plates are used in residential and light commercial construction wherever pipes, conduit, or cables pass through framing within 1.25 inches of the face of a stud or joist. They are a required installation by the International Residential Code and the National Electrical Code in locations where the line is vulnerable to fastener damage after walls are closed. The 920-3 is suited for single-trade and multi-trade rough-in applications in wood-framed wall and floor assemblies.
Designed as a standard OEM-style nail plate for use in wood-framed residential and light commercial construction wherever pipes, conduit, or cables require fastener protection at stud or joist penetrations.
Nail plates are typically installed by plumbers, electricians, or mechanical contractors during the rough-in phase before drywall. The plate is secured directly to the face of the framing member over the notch or bore using the plate's pre-installed prongs or fasteners as applicable. Ensure all lines are properly positioned and supported before securing the plate. Consult the IRC, NEC, or IPC for minimum distance requirements that trigger mandatory plate installation in your jurisdiction.
