The G E LIGHTING 64821 is a fluorescent starter designed to initiate the arc in preheat-style fluorescent lamps. The starter provides the brief high-voltage pulse needed to ionize the gas inside the lamp tube, allowing the lamp to strike and maintain a stable discharge. This is an FS-5-C/TP type starter sold in a 2-pack configuration. It is compatible with 4-watt, 6-watt, and 8-watt preheat fluorescent lamps commonly found in older residential and commercial fixtures. Electricians and lighting maintenance technicians are the primary installers of this component.
This starter is suited for preheat fluorescent fixture applications in residential, light commercial, and institutional settings. Typical installations include under-cabinet lighting, desk lamps, older troffer-style fixtures, and specialty task lighting that use small-diameter preheat fluorescent tubes. The starter is a consumable component and is routinely replaced during lamp servicing or when a lamp exhibits flickering or repeated cycling without striking.
Designed for use with 4-watt, 6-watt, and 8-watt preheat-style fluorescent lamps requiring an FS-5 type starter.
Installation is performed by a qualified electrician or lighting technician. Power to the fixture must be shut off at the circuit breaker before accessing the starter socket. The starter twists out of its socket and the replacement inserts with a quarter-turn lock. Do not attempt to replace the starter while the fixture is energized.
