The FERNCO INC P44U-405 is a 4-inch cast iron hub donut designed to create a leak-resistant transition between service weight cast iron pipe and the plain end of 4-inch PVC Schedule 40 plastic pipe. This fitting seats inside the cast iron hub and accepts the PVC pipe end, eliminating the need for lead and oakum or specialized joining tools. It is a compression-style mechanical coupling component used in drain, waste, and vent (DWV) systems. Plumbers and pipefitters install this fitting during new construction, renovations, or repair work where cast iron and plastic pipe systems must be joined at a hub connection.
This hub donut is used in residential and light commercial DWV applications where a 4-inch service weight cast iron hub meets a 4-inch PVC Schedule 40 plain-end pipe. It is a common repair and retrofit fitting found in older homes being updated from cast iron to PVC drain lines, as well as in new construction where mixed-material drain systems are specified. It installs without solvent cement, caulking, or flame — the donut compresses into the hub to form a seal around the PVC pipe insertion.
Designed for use with 4-inch service weight cast iron pipe hubs and the plain end of 4-inch PVC Schedule 40 plastic pipe in DWV applications.
Installation is performed by licensed plumbers following applicable plumbing codes such as the IPC or local adopted standards. Shut off water supply and verify the system is depressurized before beginning work. Seat the donut firmly into the cast iron hub before inserting the PVC pipe end to ensure a proper compression seal. Do not use pipe dope, solvent cement, or sealants unless specifically required by the authority having jurisdiction.
