The FERNCO fernco-1006-44 is a flexible shielded coupling designed to transition 4-inch concrete pipe to 4-inch cast iron, plastic, copper, steel, or lead pipe. It creates a watertight, pressure-rated mechanical joint without the need for solvent cement or hot work. The coupling body uses a flexible elastomeric sleeve that conforms to minor surface irregularities on both pipe ends, making it well suited for repair and retrofit work in drain, waste, and vent systems. Licensed plumbers and drain technicians are the primary installers of this fitting in both residential and light commercial applications.
This coupling is commonly used where a concrete sewer or drain line meets a transition to another pipe material — a scenario frequently encountered during basement drain repairs, sewer lateral tie-ins, and underground drain renovations. Its multi-material compatibility eliminates the need to stock separate transition fittings for each pipe type. The outside dimensions of the coupling are 5.57 inches long by 4.31 inches wide by 3.96 inches deep, making it a compact fit in tight trench or below-slab work.
Designed for use with 4-inch concrete pipe transitioning to 4-inch cast iron, plastic, copper, steel, or lead pipe in DWV applications.
Installation is performed by a licensed plumber in accordance with the applicable edition of the International Plumbing Code (IPC). Before installing, ensure the pipe ends are clean, free of burrs, and cut square. Stainless steel clamps should be tightened evenly using a nut driver or torque-limiting screwdriver per the coupling manufacturer guidance. Do not over-tighten clamps, as this can distort the elastomeric sleeve and compromise the seal.
