The ESAB 693000291 is a ceramic weld backing strip designed to support the root pass in single-sided welding applications. Ceramic backing holds molten weld metal in place during the first pass, allowing welders to achieve full-penetration welds without a backing bar or second-side access. This piece measures 1 inch in length and is cut at a 45-degree angle, making it suited for corner joints and angled seam configurations. The FBF backing type is a formed ceramic tile backed with adhesive tape that bonds directly to the base metal. Licensed welders and certified welding inspectors typically specify ceramic backing for structural, pipe, and plate work where backgouging is not practical.

This ceramic weld backing is used in structural steel fabrication, shipbuilding, pressure vessel construction, and general plate welding. The 45-degree angle profile fits joints where a straight strip would not conform correctly to the weld groove geometry.
