The ESAB 693000051 is a flat ceramic weld backing designed to support full-penetration welds by providing a stable, heat-resistant surface on the root side of a weld joint. Each piece measures 2 inches long, 2 inches wide, and 3/8 inch thick. The ceramic material withstands the intense heat of the weld pool, preventing burn-through and helping the welder achieve a clean, consistent root bead profile without requiring a second pass from the back side. Welders and fabricators working on structural plate, pipe joints, and sheet metal assemblies rely on this type of backing to meet code-quality root bead requirements efficiently.
This ceramic weld backing is suited for use in structural steel fabrication, shipbuilding, pressure vessel construction, and general metal fabrication where single-sided welding is required. The flat profile makes it appropriate for butt joints on flat plate and similar joint configurations. Each box contains 16 packaging feet of backing strips, providing enough material for multiple joint setups on a single job. It is compatible with common arc welding processes including SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, and SAW applications where root support is needed.

Ceramic weld backing is typically applied and removed by a certified welder or welding technician following the applicable welding procedure specification (WPS). Ensure the base metal joint surfaces are clean, dry, and free of mill scale, oil, or contaminants before applying the backing. Backing strips should be firmly seated against the root face of the joint to prevent gaps that can allow weld metal leakage. After the weld has cooled, remove the ceramic backing carefully, as the material is brittle and may fracture during removal.
