The ESAB 693000044 is a grooved ceramic weld backing tile used to support the weld pool on the root pass of single-sided welds. Each tile measures 2 inches long, 2 inches wide, and 3/8 inch thick, featuring a formed groove that shapes the back bead and prevents burn-through. Ceramic backing eliminates the need for a backup welder or back-gouging on many joint configurations, reducing labor time on structural, pipe, and plate fabrication work. Welders and fabricators use this backing on joints where full penetration is required and access to the backside is limited or impractical.

This backing tile is suited for flat and horizontal groove weld applications in structural steel fabrication, shipbuilding, pressure vessel work, and general plate welding. The grooved profile controls bead geometry on the back face of the joint. Each box contains 16 tiles packaged as a single unit. The flat and grooved backing type accommodates a range of joint preparations where a consistent, supported root bead is needed without back purging or secondary weld passes from the reverse side.
