Product Description

The ESAB 255055311 is a low alloy steel stick electrode classified E8018-B2R, also identified as 8018-CM, designed for shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) of chromium-molybdenum steels. The electrode measures 5/32 inches in diameter and 14 inches in length. Its alloy composition includes 1.25% chromium and 0.5% molybdenum, giving weld deposits the elevated-temperature strength and creep resistance required in high-pressure service. The improved low-hydrogen coating carries an H4R designation, meaning it resists moisture absorption even in opened containers and high-humidity job sites. Each unit ships in a 50 lb hermetically sealed can to maintain that low-hydrogen integrity from warehouse to weld.

This electrode is primarily used in power piping and boiler fabrication, where base materials include 1/2% Cr - 1/2% Mo, 1% Cr - 1/2% Mo, and 1-1/4% Cr - 1/2% Mo alloy steels. Typical workpieces are plates, pipes, tubes, castings, and forgings in utility, petrochemical, and industrial boiler applications. Qualified welders working to ASME Section I, Section VIII, or B31.1 power piping codes will recognize the alloy class and low-hydrogen process requirements this electrode is built to meet.

Key Features

  • E8018-B2R classification with 1.25% Cr and 0.5% Mo alloy additions for elevated-temperature service
  • H4R low-hydrogen coating resists moisture pick-up in opened containers and humid environments
  • 5/32 inches diameter by 14 inches length — standard sizing for structural and pipe passes
  • Hermetically sealed 50 lb can preserves low-hydrogen electrode condition during storage and transport
  • Suited for welding plates, pipes, tubes, castings, and forgings in power piping and boiler work

Compatibility

Designed for welding chromium-molybdenum steels in the 1/2% Cr - 1/2% Mo, 1% Cr - 1/2% Mo, and 1-1/4% Cr - 1/2% Mo alloy families, as used in power piping, boiler, and pressure vessel fabrication.

Installation Notes

Low-hydrogen electrodes must be stored and handled per applicable welding procedure specifications; once the hermetically sealed can is opened, store unused electrodes in a rod oven at the temperature specified by the WPS to maintain H4R compliance. Preheat and interpass temperature requirements for Cr-Mo base metals are governed by the applicable ASME or AWS D1 code and the qualified welding procedure — do not weld without confirming those parameters. Only qualified welders holding the appropriate SMAW process and material group qualifications should perform this work. Verify base metal heat number and alloy content before welding to confirm electrode-to-base-metal compatibility.
