The EAGLE CUTTING TOOL SP-5000-20-P-I is a high-speed steel (HSS) spiral point plug tap ground to a 1/2-20 UNF thread form. The spiral point geometry drives chips forward ahead of the cutting flutes, keeping the thread form clean and reducing the risk of chip packing in through-hole applications. This tap is suited for machinists, maintenance technicians, and trade professionals who need a reliable threading solution for ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Its plug chamfer — typically 3 to 5 threads — makes it appropriate for through-hole threading where the tap can advance past the full thread depth.
This tap covers through-hole threading jobs in mild steel, aluminum, brass, and similar machinable materials. It is commonly used in HVAC fabrication, plumbing rough-in work, electrical panel and enclosure fabrication, and general mechanical maintenance where 1/2-20 UNF fastener threads must be cut or repaired. The plug chamfer style makes it the standard choice when threading completely through a workpiece rather than stopping at a blind hole bottom.
Designed as a standard 1/2-20 UNF plug tap compatible with conventional tap handles, T-handle wrenches, and machine tapping chucks that accept the corresponding tap shank size for this thread range.
This tap is installed by a machinist or skilled tradesperson using a tap wrench, T-handle, or machine tapping setup. Always use a cutting fluid appropriate to the workpiece material to extend tap life and improve thread quality. Secure the workpiece firmly before threading, and back off the tap periodically to break chips during hand tapping. Forcing a tap against resistance risks breakage — if the tap binds, back out and clear chips before continuing.
