The EAGLE CUTTING TOOL SP-2500-20-P-I is a 1/4-20 high-speed steel (HSS) spiral point plug tap designed for cutting internal threads in through-holes. The spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting action, preventing chip packing and allowing continuous threading without backing out to clear. This tap covers the 1/4-20 Unified National Coarse (UNC) thread form, one of the most common fastener thread sizes in commercial and industrial work. Machinists, pipefitters, and maintenance technicians reach for this style of tap when threading steel, cast iron, aluminum, and similar materials on the drill press, CNC machine, or hand-held tapping fixture.
This spiral point plug tap is suited for production threading and general-purpose shop work where through-hole tapping is the dominant application. The plug chamfer — typically 3 to 5 thread leads — provides a gradual entry, making it appropriate for starting threads cleanly from the top of a through-hole. It is widely used in manufacturing, fabrication shops, and MRO maintenance environments where 1/4-20 threaded holes are routinely cut in structural components, brackets, housings, and fixtures.
Designed as a standard 1/4-20 UNC spiral point plug tap compatible with conventional tap handles, T-handle wrenches, drill press tapping attachments, and CNC tapping heads that accept standard tap shank dimensions for this thread size.
Threading operations should be performed by a qualified machinist or tradesperson familiar with tap selection, cutting speeds, and lubricant requirements for the workpiece material. Always use an appropriate cutting fluid or tapping oil to extend tool life and improve thread quality. Ensure the tap is properly aligned perpendicular to the workpiece before applying torque to avoid tap breakage or cross-threading. Replace any worn or chipped tap before continuing production to prevent damage to the workpiece.
