The EAGLE CUTTING TOOL S400-028-I is a 7/16-inch high-speed steel (HSS) stub drill bit featuring a 135-degree split point geometry. Stub drills, also called screw-machine-length drills, are shorter than jobber-length bits, which increases rigidity and reduces deflection in tight workspaces or multi-spindle setups. The 135-degree split point starts on contact without a center punch and reduces walking on hard or slick surfaces. This bit is suited for machinists, pipefitters, HVAC technicians, and maintenance trades drilling through ferrous metals, light alloys, and structural steel.
The S400-028-I is appropriate for use in drill presses, CNC turret lathes, and hand-held power drills where a shorter flute length provides better control and reduces chatter. Its compact length makes it a practical choice when clearance is limited, such as drilling in enclosures, panels, junction boxes, or tight equipment frames. The stub format is standard in production and maintenance environments where repeatability and bit life matter.
Designed as a standard stub-length drill bit compatible with 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch keyed or keyless drill chucks on hand-held drills, drill presses, and multi-spindle production equipment accepting 7/16-inch shank tooling.
Secure the bit fully in the chuck before operation and verify chuck key is removed prior to starting the tool. Use appropriate cutting fluid when drilling hardened steel or stainless to extend bit life and reduce heat buildup. Wear eye protection and secure the workpiece to prevent rotation. Disposal of worn HSS tooling should follow applicable shop waste procedures.
