The EAGLE CUTTING TOOL HT-640-T-I is a 6-40 high-speed steel (HSS) hand taper tap designed for cutting internal threads by hand in metal workpieces. The taper tap features a gradual lead that eases thread-starting in through-holes and blind holes alike, distributing cutting forces across multiple teeth for cleaner thread engagement. At 0.31 pounds, this is a compact, lightweight tap suited for precision threading work in tight spaces. It is the first tap in a standard three-tap sequence and is typically paired with plug and bottoming taps to complete a full thread set in harder materials.
This tap is intended for use in metalworking, mechanical assembly, and maintenance applications requiring 6-40 unified fine (UNF) threads. It is well-suited for threading aluminum, mild steel, brass, and similar materials in light-to-medium duty applications. Machinists, pipefitters, and maintenance technicians commonly use this tap for instrument hardware, small fastener replacement, and precision component assembly where the 6-40 thread specification is called for.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or standard hand tap for use in any application requiring a 6-40 UNF taper tap with a standard tap wrench or T-handle driver.
This tap is installed by hand using a tap wrench or T-handle; power driving is not recommended for hand taps of this size, as it increases the risk of breakage. Secure the workpiece firmly and ensure the tap is started perpendicular to the surface to prevent cross-threading. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve thread quality. Follow standard shop safety practices, including eye protection, when threading metal.
