The EAGLE CUTTING TOOL HT-640-P-I is a 6-40 high-speed steel (HSS) hand plug tap designed for threading operations in metal and other machinable materials. The plug chamfer — typically 3 to 5 threads of taper — makes it suitable for through-hole threading as well as starting threads in blind holes where some clearance exists at the bottom. Machinists, maintenance technicians, and tool-and-die professionals reach for hand plug taps when cutting internal threads by hand using a tap wrench or T-handle. HSS construction provides good hardness and wear resistance for production use across a range of common shop materials.
This tap is used in standard 6-40 UNF threading applications across light manufacturing, maintenance and repair operations (MRO), and precision assembly work. The 6-40 designation indicates a No. 6 screw size with 40 threads per inch on the Unified Fine (UNF) thread series. It is suited for small-fastener threading tasks where fine thread engagement and precise fit are required, such as instrument assemblies, electronics enclosures, and small mechanical components. The import designation reflects cost-effective sourcing appropriate for general-purpose shop use.
Designed as a standard hand plug tap for 6-40 UNF threaded holes in general-purpose machining, MRO, and assembly applications.
Cutting fluid or tapping oil should be applied during use to reduce heat buildup and extend tap life. Advance the tap gradually and back off periodically to break chips and prevent tap breakage, especially in blind holes. Ensure the tap is started square to the workpiece to avoid cross-threading or tap failure. Broken taps in blind holes can be extremely difficult to remove, so correct setup and steady pressure are essential.
