The EAGLE CUTTING TOOL HT-5000-20-P-D is a 1/2-20 high-speed steel (HSS) hand plug tap manufactured in the USA. It is designed to cut internal threads in metal workpieces by hand, producing a 1/2 inch diameter thread with 20 threads per inch (TPI) in a unified fine (UNF) pitch. The plug chamfer style — with a 3 to 5 thread lead — makes it suitable for through holes and deeper blind holes where a starting taper is not required. Machinists, pipefitters, millwrights, and general maintenance trades use this tap for thread repair and new thread creation in steel, aluminum, and similar materials.
This tap is used in maintenance, repair, and production environments where hand tapping is required. The 1/2-20 UNF thread specification is common in automotive, industrial machinery, and structural applications where a fine-thread fastener provides improved holding strength and vibration resistance over coarse-thread alternatives. The plug chamfer makes it a versatile choice for both through-hole and moderate-depth blind-hole applications.
Designed as a direct-use hand tap for any application requiring a 1/2-20 UNF internal thread, compatible with standard tap wrenches and T-handle drivers that accept the tap's square drive shank.
This tap is installed by a machinist or qualified tradesperson using a tap wrench or T-handle driver. Before tapping, ensure the workpiece is clamped securely and the pilot hole is drilled to the correct tap-drill diameter for a 1/2-20 thread. Apply cutting fluid throughout the tapping process and periodically back off the tap to break chips and prevent binding. Never force the tap if resistance increases sharply, as HSS taps are brittle and will break under excessive torque.
