The EAGLE CUTTING TOOL HT-440-T-I is a 4-40 high-speed steel (HSS) hand taper tap designed for cutting internal threads in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The taper configuration features a gradual lead that distributes cutting forces across multiple threads, making it well suited for starting threads in through-holes or blind holes with adequate depth. At 0.31 pounds, this is a lightweight, single-piece threading tool used by machinists, pipefitters, electricians, and maintenance technicians for hand-tapping operations in production and field repair settings.
This tap is sized for the 4-40 thread standard, which is a No. 4 diameter with 40 threads per inch — a fine-pitch, small-diameter thread commonly found in electronic enclosures, instrument panels, small fixtures, and light mechanical assemblies. It is driven with a standard tap wrench and is appropriate for bench work or in-place repair where machine tapping is not practical. The HSS construction provides adequate hardness and wear resistance for threading steel, aluminum, brass, and similar materials.
Designed as a hand-driven threading tool compatible with standard 4-40 tap wrenches and T-handle tap holders used in general metalworking and maintenance applications.
This tap is installed by a machinist or qualified technician using a properly sized tap wrench. Secure the workpiece before tapping, apply cutting fluid appropriate for the base material, and advance the tap with steady, even pressure while backing off periodically to break chips. Never force a tap against resistance, as HSS taps in small diameters are susceptible to breakage under side load or torque overload.
