The EAGLE CUTTING TOOL HT-256-T-I is a 2-56 high-speed steel (HSS) hand taper tap designed for cutting internal threads in through-holes and blind-hole starting applications. The taper chamfer on this tap distributes cutting load across multiple leading threads, making thread engagement smoother and reducing the risk of tap breakage in harder materials. Weighing 0.31 pounds, it is a lightweight, single-piece cutting tool suited for use by machinists, electricians, HVAC technicians, and other trades that require precision threading in small-diameter fastener work.
This tap is used wherever 2-56 UNC internal threads need to be cut or chased in metal workpieces. The taper-style geometry makes it particularly useful when starting threads in a straight, aligned entry — common in control panel fabrication, electrical enclosure work, instrument mounting, and light mechanical assembly. It is well suited to manual hand-tapping operations using a standard tap wrench, as well as light machine tapping setups.
Designed as a standard 2-56 UNC hand taper tap compatible with typical tap wrenches and tap holders sized for small-diameter taps used in general metalworking and trade applications.
Thread cutting should be performed by a qualified machinist or trade professional familiar with proper tapping technique. Always use cutting fluid or tapping oil appropriate for the workpiece material to extend tap life and improve thread finish. Secure the workpiece firmly before tapping and back the tap off periodically to clear chips and reduce the risk of breakage. Follow applicable shop safety practices when working with cutting tools.
