The EAGLE CUTTING TOOL HT-1224-P-D is a 12-24 UNC hand plug tap ground from high-speed steel (HSS). It cuts internal threads in through-holes and blind holes, serving as the second tap in a standard three-tap sequence. The plug chamfer — typically 3 to 5 threads — allows it to start easily in a pre-drilled hole while still cutting full threads close to the bottom. Machinists, maintenance technicians, and general metalworkers reach for this tap when threading steel, aluminum, cast iron, and similar materials by hand or in a low-speed tapping setup. It is manufactured in the USA.
This tap is suited for threading 12-24 UNC holes in light to medium-duty fabrication, repair, and maintenance work. Common applications include threading fastener holes in enclosures, brackets, machine frames, and equipment panels. It is appropriate for both production shops and field service environments where a reliable, domestically made HSS tap is required for standard unified coarse thread work.
Designed as an OEM-style hand tap for use in any standard 12-24 UNC tapping application requiring a plug-style starting chamfer.
Secure the workpiece firmly before tapping and ensure the pilot hole is drilled to the correct tap drill size for a 12-24 UNC thread. Apply cutting oil or tapping fluid to extend tap life and improve thread finish, especially in steel. Use a calibrated tap wrench and advance the tap with steady, even pressure, backing off a half turn periodically to break chips. Replace any tap that shows signs of chipping, glazing, or binding to avoid broken tap removal.
