The DRILL ROD TOOL STEELS 860166 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar supplied in an annealed, machinable condition ready for precision toolmaking applications. Conforming to AISI Type O1 material specification, this flat stock measures 3/64 inch thick, 2 inches wide, and 36 inches long, with a weight of 0.97 pounds per piece. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, width tolerance is plus 0.005 inches to 0.000 inches, and length tolerance is plus 0.5 inches. Tool and die makers, machinists, and metalworking shops use this material for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, knives, and other tooling components that require a consistent, tight-tolerance blank before heat treatment.
This O1 flat stock is suited for job shops, production tool rooms, and maintenance departments that machine custom tooling in-house. The oil-hardening designation means the stock responds to a controlled oil-quench heat treatment cycle to achieve the hardness levels required for cutting and forming tooling. Its flat, rectangular profile simplifies layout, sawing, and milling operations without the need for additional stock removal to establish a reference surface. Single-piece quantities are available, making it practical for prototype and repair work as well as production runs.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat blank suitable for use in standard toolmaking, die-making, and precision machining applications where AISI Type O1 material specification is required.
Machining and heat treatment of tool steel should be performed by qualified machinists or tool and die makers following established shop safety practices. All grinding, sawing, and milling operations should be completed before the oil-hardening heat treatment cycle. Post-hardening tempering is required to relieve internal stress and reduce brittleness; follow the material supplier heat treatment guidelines for O1 tool steel. Appropriate personal protective equipment including eye protection and heat-resistant gloves must be used during any thermal processing.
