The DRILL ROD TOOL STEELS 58037 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar cut to 2 inches thick, 4 inches wide, and 36 inches long. O1 is a general-purpose tool steel valued for its excellent machinability in the annealed state and consistent dimensional stability through the oil-hardening process. At 82.49 pounds per piece, this is a full-section flat stock suited for toolmakers, machinists, and die shops fabricating punches, dies, gauges, and precision tooling where tight dimensional tolerances are required before and after heat treatment.
This flat stock is well suited for job shops, tool and die operations, and maintenance machining environments that require a reliable O1 stock in large cross-sections. The 2 x 4 inch cross-section supports heavy-duty tooling applications such as die blocks, forming tools, and fixture components. The 36-inch length allows multiple blanks to be cut from a single bar, reducing material waste in higher-volume tooling projects. A licensed machinist or toolmaker typically sources and machines this stock prior to heat treatment by a qualified heat treater.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 oil-hardening flat stock for use in tool and die fabrication, gauging, punches, and precision tooling applications requiring AISI Type O1 material specification.
Machining of O1 tool steel flat stock is typically performed by qualified machinists or toolmakers using conventional milling, grinding, and turning equipment. Material should be rough-machined to near-final dimensions before hardening, then finish-ground after heat treatment to achieve final tolerances. Oil hardening should be performed by a certified heat treater following AISI O1 heat treatment guidelines. Always allow stock to reach a stable temperature before machining to avoid dimensional inconsistency.
