The DRILL ROD TOOL STEELS 57935 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar cut to 0.375 inches thick, 4.5 inches wide, and 36 inches long. O1 is a general-purpose oil-hardening tool steel conforming to AISI Type O1, widely used in toolmaking, jig and fixture fabrication, and precision machining applications. It ships in an annealed, soft condition and is intended to be machined, ground, and then oil-quenched to achieve working hardness. The piece weighs approximately 17.4 pounds. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for close-tolerance tooling work where consistent stock removal is required.
This flat stock is used in machine shops, tool and die operations, and fabrication environments where a reliable, machinable tool steel is needed. Typical applications include blanks for cutting tools, punches, dies, gauges, and fixtures. It is well suited for job shops that need a single piece of accurately sized flat stock to rough-machine and then heat treat. The 36-inch length provides enough material for most single-piece tooling applications without requiring bar sawing.
Designed as a standard AISI Type O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for general toolmaking, die making, and precision fixture applications where oil-quench heat treatment will be performed.
Machining and heat treatment of O1 tool steel should be performed by qualified machinists or tool and die makers familiar with oil-hardening steel grades. The bar is supplied soft and must be hardened and tempered by oil quenching to achieve working hardness - follow established metallurgical procedures for AISI O1 and consult the material safety data sheet before grinding or machining. Use appropriate cutting fluids during machining operations. Personal protective equipment including eye protection and gloves is required when handling sharp-edged flat bar stock.
