The DRILL ROD TOOL STEELS 57771 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar measuring 3/8 inch thick, 7 inches wide, and 18 inches long. O1 tool steel is a general-purpose, oil-quenched cold-work steel widely used in toolmaking, die-making, and precision machining applications where dimensional stability and good wear resistance after hardening are required. This flat stock ships in the annealed condition and is ready for machining, grinding, and heat treating. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, making it suitable for precision tool and die work where tight dimensional control is critical. Machinists, toolmakers, and die makers are the primary users of this material.
This flat stock is suited for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, blanking tools, knives, and similar toolroom components in both job shop and production environments. The 3/8 inch by 7 inch by 18 inch size is a practical off-the-shelf dimension for medium-format tooling blanks that require further machining or grinding to final size. This bar is appropriate for job shops, tool and die facilities, and maintenance departments requiring a reliable O1 flat stock in a standard size without committing to full-length bar stock.
Designed as a standard off-the-shelf O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock for use in general toolmaking, die-making, and precision machining applications requiring AISI Type O1 material specification.
Cutting, grinding, and heat treating of tool steel should be performed by qualified machinists or toolmakers following established shop safety practices. Always power down and lock out any machine tool before securing the workpiece. Oil-hardening heat treatment requires a controlled furnace and an appropriate quench oil tank - follow the steel manufacturer's published heat treat data for O1 for austenitizing temperature and soak time. Wear appropriate PPE including heat-resistant gloves and face protection during quenching operations.
