The DRILL ROD TOOL STEELS 57749 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock cut to 0.25 inches thick, 12 inches wide, and 18 inches long. O1 is an oil-hardening cold-work tool steel known for its consistent dimensional stability, good machinability in the annealed state, and ability to hold a keen edge after heat treatment. This flat stock ships in the soft-annealed condition, ready for machining, grinding, or EDM work prior to hardening. It is used by tool and die makers, machinists, and metalworking shops for fabricating punches, dies, gauges, jigs, and similar precision tooling components. At 15.46 pounds per piece, this is a substantial billet suitable for production-scale tooling work.
This flat stock is suited for job shops, tool rooms, and manufacturing facilities where close-tolerance blanks are needed without additional saw cutting or milling from larger bar stock. The annealed condition allows straightforward machining with standard HSS or carbide tooling before the oil-quench hardening cycle. Typical applications include blanking dies, forming tools, guide rails, wear plates, and fixtures that require a combination of moderate toughness and hardness after heat treatment. AISI Type O1 is one of the most widely used cold-work tool steel grades in general tooling practice.
Designed as a standard AISI Type O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat blank suitable for general cold-work tooling applications where this grade is specified by print or shop standard.
O1 tool steel flat stock is worked by qualified machinists and tool and die makers using conventional metalworking equipment. Before hardening operations, confirm stock is fully stress-relieved and machined to near-final dimensions, as distortion can occur during oil quenching. Follow the material manufacturer's recommended heat-treat cycle for austenitizing temperature, quench medium, and tempering range - do not substitute water quench for oil quench on this grade. Handle annealed stock with care to avoid surface nicks or bending that could create stress risers prior to heat treatment.
