The DISSTON COMPANY 571240 is a high-speed steel (HSS) cobalt drill bit designed for aggressive drilling in hard and exotic metals. Built to jobber length at 3/16 inch diameter and 3-1/2 inches overall length, it features an 8 percent cobalt content that delivers sustained heat resistance at temperatures exceeding 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The 135-degree split point geometry incorporates four cutting edges for fast penetration and self-centering action, eliminating the need for a center punch or pilot hole. This bit is suited for trade professionals who regularly drill through materials that destroy standard HSS tooling.
This drill bit is recommended for use in heat-treated steel, stainless steel, chrome, manganese steel, titanium, and armor plate. It is a practical choice for HVAC installers, pipefitters, electricians, and fabricators working with hard-metal substrates in both field and shop environments. The straight shank accepts standard three-jaw drill chucks, making it compatible with common corded and cordless drill drivers used in trade applications.
Designed for drilling in hard metals including heat-treated steel, stainless steel, chrome, manganese steel, titanium, and armor plate. Fits any standard drill chuck accepting a 3/16 inch straight-shank bit.
Use a drill press or hand drill set to an appropriate speed for the material being drilled — lower RPM is generally recommended for harder metals to prevent bit overheating. Apply cutting fluid or lubricant when drilling stainless steel or titanium to extend bit life and improve cut quality. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling to prevent movement. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace the bit if chipping or excessive wear is observed.
