The DISSTON COMPANY 571190 is a cobalt high speed steel jobber-length drill bit designed for cutting through hard and abrasion-resistant metals. The 135-degree split point tip features four cutting edges that initiate penetration quickly and prevent the bit from walking on contact. An 8 percent cobalt content raises the heat tolerance of the steel, allowing efficient cutting at temperatures exceeding 1,000 degrees F. The straight shank seats in standard three-jaw drill chucks. This bit is sized at 1/16 inch diameter with a 1-7/8 inch flute length and is sold individually on a card.
This drill bit is suited for trade and maintenance work where common twist bits fail. Typical applications include drilling into heat-treated steel, stainless steel, chrome alloys, manganese steel, titanium, and armor plate. HVAC techs, plumbers, and electricians reach for cobalt bits when drilling through structural steel, hardened fastener bosses, or thick-gauge stainless enclosures during equipment installation or retrofit work. The jobber length provides a practical reach-to-rigidity balance for hand drill and drill press use.
Designed for use in standard three-jaw drill chucks on hand drills and drill presses where a 1/16 inch straight-shank cobalt drill bit is required for hard-metal applications.
Cobalt drill bits should be used with appropriate cutting fluid or lubricant when drilling stainless steel or other work-hardening alloys to extend bit life and reduce heat buildup. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling to prevent movement and bit breakage at this small diameter. Use steady, moderate feed pressure and allow the cutting edges to work without forcing the bit. Dispose of worn bits per applicable shop safety practices.
