The DISSTON COMPANY 197316 is a titanium-nitride coated, high speed steel (HSS) jobber-length drill bit sized at 9/64 inches in diameter and 2-7/8 inches in overall length. The 135-degree split point geometry features four cutting edges that prevent the bit from walking on contact, allowing fast and accurate hole starting without a center punch. The titanium-nitride surface finish reduces friction, improves chip evacuation, and extends service life compared to uncoated HSS bits. It accepts a standard straight shank and is suited for use in cordless and corded drills. Installers in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and general construction trades will find this bit appropriate for everyday fastening and access work.
This bit is recommended for heavy-duty drilling in wood, plastic, wallboard, and plywood, as well as soft metals such as aluminum and copper. It is also rated for moderate use in heat-treated or ferrous metals. The jobber-length format fits standard drill chucks and is a practical choice for tight-clearance rough-in work and fixture mounting encountered across the mechanical trades. The carded, single-bit packaging makes it easy to stock individually at a job site or service van.
Designed for use with standard straight-shank drill chucks on corded and cordless drills. Suitable for multipurpose drilling applications in wood, plastic, soft metals, wallboard, and plywood, with moderate capability in ferrous and heat-treated metals.
Secure the straight shank fully in the drill chuck before operation and verify chuck key is removed prior to starting the drill. Use appropriate eye protection and, when drilling metals, apply a cutting fluid to reduce heat buildup and prolong bit life. Drilling at lower speeds with consistent feed pressure is recommended for harder materials to avoid overheating the cutting edges. Dispose of worn bits per shop practice; do not attempt to re-sharpen titanium-coated bits without proper grinding equipment.
