The DISSTON COMPANY 120071 is a high speed steel (HSS) black oxide drill bit in jobber length, designed for tradespeople and experienced DIYers who need reliable, fast-penetrating drilling across a range of common materials. The bit measures 13/32 inches in diameter with an overall length of 5-1/4 inches and a 3/8-inch shank. The 135-degree split point features four cutting edges that prevent walking on contact, eliminating the need for a center punch on most surfaces. The black oxide tempering treatment reduces frictional heat buildup and improves chip evacuation during drilling, extending useful bit life under sustained use.
This drill bit is suited for general-purpose drilling in wood, plastic, wallboard, plywood, soft metals, aluminum, brass, and bronze. It is also rated for occasional use in stainless steel and other hard metals, making it a practical single-bit option on mixed-material jobsites. Electricians, plumbers, HVAC installers, and general contractors commonly use jobber-length HSS bits for rough-in work, equipment mounting, and structural penetrations. The 3/8-inch shank is compatible with standard 3/8-inch and 1/2-inch keyless or keyed drill chucks.
Designed for use with 3/8-inch and 1/2-inch corded or cordless drills equipped with standard keyless or keyed chucks. Suitable for multipurpose drilling in wood, plastic, wallboard, plywood, soft metals, aluminum, brass, bronze, and occasional use in stainless steel and other hard metals.
A licensed electrician, plumber, or HVAC technician should select drill speed appropriate to the material being drilled — lower speeds for metal, higher speeds for wood and plastic. Secure the workpiece before drilling and wear appropriate eye protection. For metal drilling, use a cutting fluid or lubricant to extend bit life and improve chip clearing. Inspect the bit for chipping or dulling before each use; a damaged cutting edge reduces accuracy and increases heat.
