The DEWALT DW8254 is a Type 27 flap disc designed for aggressive material removal and surface blending on metal, weld seams, and fabricated steel. Built with a Z40-grit zirconia alumina abrasive, this disc delivers fast stock removal while maintaining a consistent cut throughout the life of the disc. The 4-1/2-inch diameter and 5/8-11 threaded hub make it compatible with standard right-angle grinders used daily in fabrication, welding, and ironwork. The XP designation indicates an extended-performance abrasive formulation engineered for longer disc life compared to standard flap discs. Metalworking fabricators, pipefitters, and ironworkers are the primary installers of this consumable.
This flap disc is suited for flat surface grinding and blending applications on mild steel, stainless steel, and other ferrous metals. The Type 27 flat profile positions the abrasive flush to the workpiece, making it the right choice for working on flat or slightly contoured surfaces rather than edge grinding. It is commonly used in structural steel fabrication shops, pipeline work, and general metal finishing where a Z40-grit cut rate is needed for weld blending and scale removal.
Designed for use with right-angle grinders equipped with a 5/8-11 threaded spindle accepting 4-1/2-inch Type 27 flap discs.
Flap discs are installed and replaced by metalworking tradespeople including welders, fabricators, and pipefitters. Always power down and unplug or lock out the grinder before mounting or removing the disc. Verify the grinder RPM rating meets or exceeds the maximum RPM marked on the disc before operation. Inspect the disc for damage before each use and never operate a cracked or delaminated flap disc.
