The DEWALT DW1708 is a 5/16-inch brad point drill bit designed for clean, accurate entry holes in wood and wood-based materials. The brad point tip centers itself on the workmark before the flutes engage, preventing the bit from wandering across the grain. This geometry produces a flat-bottomed entry and a cleaner exit than a standard twist bit, which matters when boring holes for dowels, shelf pins, or hardware installation. Electricians, carpenters, and general contractors reach for brad point bits when hole position accuracy and surface quality cannot be compromised.
The DW1708 is suited for residential and light commercial woodworking applications including cabinet installation, rough framing with finish requirements, furniture assembly, and electrical rough-in through wood framing. The 5/16-inch diameter is a common size for dowel joints, wire grommets, and shelf-pin boring. It is sold individually and fits standard 3-jaw chucks on corded and cordless drills.
Designed as a standard brad point drill bit for use in any corded or cordless drill with a 3-jaw chuck capable of accepting a 5/16-inch shank.
Brad point bits are installed and removed by licensed tradespeople and skilled DIYers using a standard key or keyless chuck. Secure the bit fully in the chuck before operation and confirm the workpiece is clamped or otherwise stabilized. Use appropriate RPM for the wood species and bit diameter — lower speeds are recommended for harder materials to avoid burning. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace the bit if the brad point or spurs show visible wear.
