The DEWALT DW1640 is a 3-inch self feed bit designed for fast, aggressive boring through dimensional lumber, engineered wood, and similar framing materials. Self feed bits use a center screw point to pull the bit through the workpiece, allowing the outer cutting edges to shear clean, consistent holes without requiring heavy downward pressure from the operator. This bit is suited for electricians, plumbers, and HVAC technicians who need to run conduit, pipe, or duct penetrations through wood framing during rough-in work.
The DW1640 is a standard choice for rough-in drilling applications in residential and light commercial construction. It is used when boring large-diameter holes through wall plates, floor joists, and headers where conduit, piping, or flexible duct must pass. The 3-inch cutting diameter accommodates a wide range of rough-in penetration sizes common in trade work.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use self feed bit for standard hex-shank and spade-bit compatible drill chucks used in trade rough-in drilling applications.
Self feed bits should be installed in a heavy-duty drill with adequate torque capacity, such as a right-angle drill or hole-hawg style tool, using the appropriate chuck or hex adapter. Secure the workpiece before drilling to prevent rotation or kickback. Follow NEC, IPC, or IFGC penetration and firestopping requirements when boring through fire-rated assemblies. Inspect the center screw and cutting edges before each use and replace the bit if teeth are damaged or the screw point is worn.
