The DEWALT DW1590 is a long-series spade bit designed for boring through wood framing, sheathing, and structural lumber. At 3/8 inch in diameter and 16 inches in length, this bit is built for applications requiring extended reach — running wire or pipe through wall studs, floor joists, and headers where a standard-length bit cannot reach the work zone. The flat paddle head cuts cleanly through dimensional lumber, engineered wood, and composite materials. Electricians, plumbers, and low-voltage installers regularly use this type of bit when routing conduit or cable through deep assemblies. The extended shank provides the depth needed to complete the bore in a single pass from one side.
The DW1590 is suited for residential and light commercial rough-in work. Electricians running NM cable or conduit through wood-framed walls and floors will find the 16-inch length covers typical 2x6 and double-framed assemblies with room to spare. Plumbers drilling for supply lines and drain rough-in also use extended spade bits in this size range when access is limited to one face of the framing. The 3/8-inch diameter is a common size for drilling pass-through holes for small conduit, wire bundles, and low-voltage cabling.
Designed as a standard hex-shank spade bit compatible with 3/8-inch and larger drill chucks used in typical residential and commercial rough-in drilling applications.
Installation of this bit is performed by licensed electricians, plumbers, and low-voltage technicians during rough-in phases. Always de-energize circuits and confirm no live wiring or pressurized lines are present in the drilling path before beginning. Use appropriate eye protection when boring through wood framing. Check local building codes (NEC, IPC, IFGC) for minimum clearance requirements between bored holes and the edge of framing members.
