The CLEVELAND C70170 is a jobber-length twist drill bit designed for precision hole-making in metal and non-ferrous materials. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel with a gold oxide coating, the bit handles heat and wear better than standard HSS tooling. It carries a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and allows drilling without a center punch in most applications. At 2.5 inches overall length with a 1.4375-inch flute, it fits standard drill chucks and magnetic drill setups used in fabrication and maintenance work. This is a heavy-duty wire-gauge bit intended for professionals who need consistent, repeatable results in production or field drilling.
The C70170 is sized to wire gauge 37, which corresponds to a decimal diameter of 0.1040 inches. It is well suited for tapping pre-drill operations, clearance holes in aluminum, and pilot drilling in light steel. The NAS 907 Type J specification makes it a recognized standard in aerospace and industrial MRO work. The right-hand spiral flute with regular helix evacuates chips efficiently. Two flutes and a straight-cylindrical shank keep the bit compatible with standard keyless and keyed chucks across a wide range of drill platforms.
Designed as an OEM-specification replacement and general-use jobber drill bit for applications requiring a wire gauge 37 hole at 0.1040 inches diameter; compatible with any keyed or keyless drill chuck accepting a 0.1040-inch straight-cylindrical shank.
Installation and use of this bit should be performed by machinists, maintenance technicians, or qualified tradespeople familiar with metalworking drill press or hand drill operation. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank fully in the chuck and verify it is centered before operation. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling steel to preserve edge life, even though coolant-through is not supported by this bit. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace immediately if chipping or dulling is observed to avoid workpiece damage or bit breakage.
