The CLEVELAND C70083 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit designed for heavy-duty metal drilling applications. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a gold oxide coating, this bit delivers heat resistance and edge retention in demanding conditions. The 135-degree split point geometry reduces walking on entry and lowers the thrust needed to initiate a cut. At 2.76 inches overall length with a 1.535-inch flute, the C70083 follows standard jobber proportions suitable for most bench and hand-held drill applications. Licensed HVAC, plumbing, and electrical tradespeople reach for cobalt bits when drilling through hardened brackets, steel enclosures, and structural members where standard HSS bits lose their edge.
The C70083 is rated for aluminum as its primary workpiece material but handles a broad range of metals common in mechanical and electrical trade work. The right-hand spiral flute and web-thinned, tapered web configuration improve chip evacuation during through-hole drilling in sheet metal, angle iron, and similar trade substrates. The straight-cylindrical shank at 0.1417 inches seats securely in standard three-jaw chucks without adapter sleeves. This bit meets NAS 907 Type J standards, making it a recognized specification item for contractors who must document fastener and hole preparation tooling.
Designed as a jobber-length drill bit compatible with any standard three-jaw chuck accepting a 0.1417-inch straight-cylindrical shank, including benchtop drill presses and portable hand drills common in HVAC, plumbing, and electrical rough-in work.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified tradespeople familiar with rotary cutting tool safety. Secure the workpiece before drilling and confirm chuck jaws are fully tightened on the shank before operation. Do not exceed the rated speed range for the bit diameter and workpiece material. Replace the bit if the cutting edges show visible wear, chipping, or heat discoloration that cannot be corrected by sharpening.
