The CLEVELAND C60812 is a straight flute plug tap designed for cutting 1/2-20 UNF internal threads in through-hole applications. Built from high speed steel with a bright/uncoated finish, this tap runs a 4-flute configuration with a plug chamfer to ease thread engagement. It is a left-hand tap with an H3 thread limit, making it the correct choice when the workpiece or assembly requires reverse-thread orientation. The overall length is 3-3/8 inches with a thread length of 1-21/32 inches and a shank diameter of 0.3670 inches. Machinists and maintenance professionals use it in manual tapping or low-speed machine tapping operations where straight flute geometry is appropriate.
This tap is suited for through-hole threading in a range of materials including steel, cast iron, stainless steel, aluminum, and other non-ferrous metals. The plug chamfer style, with its moderate lead-in, works well in both production and repair environments where the tap can pass fully through the workpiece. It belongs to the Cleveland Series 1002L and is a single-piece unit packaged individually. Typical use cases include creating left-hand threaded fastener holes in automotive, industrial, and general machining applications where standard right-hand taps are not appropriate.
Designed for cutting 1/2-20 UNF left-hand internal threads to a 3B class of fit in through-hole configurations across steel, cast iron, stainless steel, and non-ferrous metals including aluminum.
This tap should be installed and used by qualified machinists familiar with tapping feeds, speeds, and proper cutting fluid selection for the workpiece material. Secure the workpiece fully before tapping and confirm the correct left-hand rotation direction before operation to avoid tap breakage. Use appropriate tapping fluid for the material being threaded; dry tapping is not recommended for stainless steel or harder alloys. Follow shop safety procedures and ensure tap wrenches or tapping heads are properly aligned to prevent cross-threading or tool breakage.
