The CLEVELAND C57606 is a spiral point plug tap designed for through-hole threading in ferrous materials including cast iron and steel. Manufactured from high speed steel with an oxide finish, it cuts a 5-40 UNC thread profile using a 2-flute, right-hand spiral point geometry that pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting zone. This geometry keeps the thread path clear during production tapping and reduces the risk of chip packing in blind or shallow through-hole applications. The H2 thread limit holds close tolerances for a 2B class of fit. Thread length is 0.625 inches over an overall length of 1.9375 inches. This tap is suited for use by machinists, maintenance technicians, and trade professionals working with small-diameter fastener threads.
The C57606 is applied in through-hole threading operations where a 5-40 UNC thread is required. Material applications include cast iron and steel, making it appropriate for light machine components, instrument hardware, and small mechanical assemblies. The plug chamfer provides a moderate lead-in, balancing cutting ease with thread quality across both hand and machine tapping setups. The 0.141-inch shank diameter is sized for standard tap holders and chucks used in bench drill presses, CNC machining centers, and hand tapping fixtures.
Designed for through-hole threading in cast iron and steel workpieces requiring a 5-40 UNC thread profile with a 2B class of fit. Compatible with standard tap holders, T-handle wrenches, and chuck-style tapping heads sized for a 0.141-inch shank diameter.
Tapping operations should be performed with appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound to extend tool life and improve thread finish in steel and cast iron. Secure the workpiece firmly before tapping and align the tap perpendicular to the hole to prevent thread runout or tap breakage. For machine tapping, set spindle speed conservatively for the material and thread diameter. Inspect the tap for chipping or wear before each use, as small-diameter taps are susceptible to breakage under side load or misalignment.
