The CLEVELAND C57085 is a spiral point tap designed for right-hand, through-hole threading in a range of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, this plug-chamfer tap runs at a 2B class of fit and carries an H3 thread limit for consistent tolerance control. It cuts an 8-32 UNC thread profile with 2 flutes and measures 2.125 inches overall length with a 0.38-inch thread length. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die tradespeople, and maintenance mechanics specify spiral point taps for production and repair threading in through-hole applications where chip flow forward is acceptable and desirable.
The C57085 is suited for through-hole threading operations in alloy steel, carbon steel, and aluminum. The spiral point geometry pushes chips ahead of the tap and out the exit side of the hole, reducing chip packing and improving cutting efficiency in production environments. With a 0.168-inch shank diameter and 0.39-inch neck length, this tap mounts in standard tap holders, quick-change adapters, or drill press setups commonly used in light manufacturing, HVAC equipment fabrication, and mechanical assembly work.
Designed for through-hole threading in alloy steel, carbon steel, and aluminum workpieces. Compatible with standard tap wrenches, T-handle holders, quick-change tap adapters, and CNC tapping attachments that accept a 0.168-inch shank diameter.
Secure the workpiece fully before tapping and ensure the through-hole is drilled to the correct tap drill size for an 8-32 UNC thread before use. Apply cutting fluid appropriate for the base material — particularly when threading alloy or carbon steel — to extend tap life and improve thread finish. Follow standard machine shop safety practices: power down any motorized equipment before changing taps, and never back-tap a spiral point style in a blind hole. Proper alignment between tap axis and hole axis is critical to prevent tap breakage.
