The CLEVELAND C55332 is a spiral point tap designed for through-hole threading operations in metal fabrication and maintenance applications. It cuts a 1/2-13 UNC thread profile using a 3-flute, plug chamfer geometry that pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting edge, keeping the flutes clear and reducing the chance of chip packing. The tap is manufactured from high speed steel (HSS) and coated with titanium nitride (TiN) to extend tool life and reduce friction during cutting. With a 3B class of fit and H3 thread limit, it produces threads suited for standard fastener engagement in structural and mechanical assemblies. Licensed machinists, maintenance technicians, and trade professionals performing field or shop threading work are the primary users of this tap.
This tap is built for through-hole threading in alloy steel, carbon steel, and aluminum workpieces. The plug chamfer — typically 3 to 5 lead threads — makes it well suited for applications where the tap can pass through the full depth of the hole. It is used in manufacturing, industrial maintenance, HVAC equipment fabrication, and mechanical service work wherever a clean 1/2-13 UNC thread is required in a through-bore. The spiral point geometry is particularly effective in CNC tapping centers and hand-tapping operations where chip evacuation forward through the hole is practical.
Suitable for through-hole threading in alloy steel, carbon steel, and aluminum. Compatible with standard 1/2-13 UNC tap holders, tapping chucks, and hand tap wrenches sized for the 0.367-inch shank diameter. Series 1011TN.
Tapping should be performed by a qualified machinist or trained technician following standard shop safety practices. Secure the workpiece firmly before tapping and ensure the starter hole is drilled to the correct tap drill diameter for a 1/2-13 UNC thread. Apply an appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound to lubricate the tap and reduce heat buildup, particularly in steel workpieces. Reverse the tap periodically when hand tapping to break chips, and never force the tap against resistance as this can result in tap breakage.
