The CLEVELAND C55306 is a spiral point plug tap designed for through-hole threading in metalworking applications. Built from high speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, it cuts 8-36 UNF threads with a 2-flute geometry and plug chamfer. The spiral point design pushes chips ahead of the tap, keeping the flutes clear during the cut. At 2.125 inches overall length with a 0.38-inch thread length and H2 thread limit, it is sized for tight-tolerance work in standard and close-fit thread classes. Licensed machinists and tool-and-die professionals are the typical users.
This tap is suited for through-hole threading operations on alloy steel, carbon steel, and aluminum workpieces. The plug chamfer provides a gradual thread lead-in, making it appropriate for production runs and general-purpose tapping where the tap can pass fully through the material. The right-hand cut and 2B/3B class of fit cover the most common UNF fastener thread tolerances encountered in manufacturing and repair work. Coolant-through is not supported on this tool.
Designed for through-hole tapping of alloy steel, aluminum, and carbon steel. Part of the Cleveland Series 1011TN product line.
Install in a tapping chuck, drill press, CNC machining center, or hand tap wrench sized for the 0.168-inch shank. Ensure the pilot hole diameter is correct for 8-36 UNF before tapping to avoid tap breakage. Apply cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material. Do not reverse the tap under power without confirming the machine is set for reverse thread extraction.
