The CLEVELAND C55298 is a spiral point tap designed for through-hole threading in ferrous and non-ferrous metals. It cuts a 5-40 UNC thread using a 2-flute, plug chamfer geometry that pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting zone, keeping flutes clear during production tapping. The tap is manufactured from high speed steel (HSS) with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating that increases surface hardness and extends tool life in abrasive materials. It carries an H2 thread limit and fits Class 2B/3B tolerance applications. Overall length is 1.938 inches with a thread length of 0.310 inches. Right-hand cut only.
This tap is suited for through-hole applications in alloy steel, carbon steel, and aluminum. The plug chamfer distributes cutting load across the first several threads, making it a practical choice for machine tapping in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping heads. The 5-40 UNC thread is common in small fastener applications found in electronics enclosures, instrument panels, and light mechanical assemblies. The TiN finish is particularly beneficial when running higher spindle speeds or tapping harder steels where uncoated HSS would wear prematurely.
Designed for through-hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, and carbon steel workpieces requiring a 5-40 UNC thread form with a Class 2B or 3B fit. Compatible with standard tap holders and tapping chucks accepting a 0.141-inch shank diameter.
This tap is intended for use by machinists and toolroom personnel in machine tapping applications. Secure the tap in a floating tap holder or rigid tapping chuck sized for the shank diameter before use. Ensure the workpiece is clamped securely and the pilot hole is drilled to the correct tap drill size for a 5-40 UNC thread before engaging the tap. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to maximize tool life and thread quality.
