The CLEVELAND C55228 is a 7/16-14 UNC bottoming hand tap designed for threading blind holes and through-holes in metal workpieces. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, it delivers extended tool life and reduced friction during tapping operations. The bottoming chamfer style allows threads to be cut close to the bottom of a blind hole, making it the right choice when full thread depth is required near the base. With 4 straight flutes and a right-hand thread direction, this tap is well suited for machine shop, maintenance, and production threading applications where a Class 2B fit and H3 thread limit are specified.
This tap is intended for use in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and free-machining stainless steel. It is a standard hand tap in the Cleveland 1003TN series, appropriate for manual tapping operations or low-speed machine tapping setups. Machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance mechanics working on threaded fastener repairs or new hole threading in these materials will find this tap fits common production workflows. The 7/16-14 UNC thread size is a widely used coarse-thread standard found across structural, mechanical, and industrial assemblies.
Designed for threading 7/16-14 UNC blind holes and through-holes in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and free-machining stainless steel. Part of the Cleveland 1003TN series of TiN-coated HSS hand taps.
This tap is installed by machinists and maintenance mechanics using a standard tap wrench or tapping fixture. Before tapping, ensure the workpiece is securely clamped and the pilot hole is drilled to the correct tap drill diameter for a 7/16-14 UNC thread. Apply an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to reduce heat and improve thread quality. Reverse the tap periodically during threading to break chips and prevent tap breakage, especially in blind holes.
