The CLEVELAND C55222 is a straight-flute hand tap designed for threading operations in both blind holes and through-holes. Built from high speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, it cuts a 5/16-24 UNF right-hand thread to a Class 3B fit with an H3 thread limit. The bottoming chamfer style allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole, making it suited for applications where thread depth is critical. Overall length is 2-23/32 inches with a thread length of 1-1/8 inches. This tap is used by machinists and tool-and-die professionals in production and maintenance environments.
The C55222 is applicable for blind hole and through-hole threading operations. It performs in a range of work materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and free-machining stainless steel. The TiN coating reduces friction and extends tool life compared to uncoated high speed steel taps in these materials. It is part of the Cleveland Series 1003TN and is appropriate for manual tapping operations using a standard tap wrench or tapping fixture.
Designed for blind hole and through-hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and free-machining stainless steel workpieces requiring a 5/16-24 UNF Class 3B thread.
Install and operate this tap using a properly sized tap wrench or tapping fixture to maintain axial alignment. Power down and lock out any machine before changing or inspecting taps in a machine-tapping setup. Apply cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material to reduce heat and extend tap life. Inspect the tap for chipping or wear before each use, as a damaged tap can seize in the workpiece.
