The CLEVELAND C55160 is a 4-40 UNC straight flute hand tap designed for threading operations in ferrous and hard materials. Manufactured from high speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, this tap delivers increased surface hardness and lubricity to extend tool life in demanding applications. The plug chamfer style provides moderate lead-in, making it suitable for both blind hole and through-hole threading. With a 3-flute straight flute geometry and right-hand thread direction, it is engineered for controlled chip formation and reliable thread quality. Licensed machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians are the primary users of this tap.
The C55160 is intended for 4-40 UNC thread production in materials including steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. Its 2B class of fit and H2 thread limit make it appropriate for standard tolerance threaded assemblies in precision manufacturing, MRO maintenance, and fabrication environments. The tap is suited for use in both manual hand tapping applications and guided machine setups at low speeds. It covers a thread length of 0.31 inches, making it compatible with shallow threading requirements common in light mechanical assemblies.
Designed for 4-40 UNC thread production in steel, stainless steel, and cast iron workpieces. Suitable for use with standard tap wrenches and tapping fixtures accepting a 0.141-inch shank diameter. Part of the CLEVELAND Series 1002TN.
This tap should be installed and operated by qualified machinists or maintenance technicians familiar with thread-cutting procedures. Always secure the workpiece firmly and use appropriate cutting fluid or tapping lubricant for the material being threaded. When tapping blind holes, periodically back the tap out to clear chips and prevent breakage. Follow shop safety practices and applicable OSHA standards when operating cutting tools.
