The CLEVELAND C54995 is a 1-1/4-7 UNC straight-flute hand tap designed for cutting internal threads in a range of metalworking applications. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, it delivers reliable performance in both blind-hole and through-hole threading operations. The plug chamfer provides a balance between starting ease and thread engagement, making it a practical choice for general-purpose tapping. With 4 flutes and a right-hand thread direction, this tap is rated to a 3B class of fit and an H4 thread limit, suiting precise threading requirements in production and job-shop environments. Licensed machinists and tool-and-die professionals are the primary installers.
This tap is suited for use on alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and free-machining stainless steel workpieces in both manual and machine-assisted hand-tapping setups. Its 5.75-inch overall length and 1.021-inch shank diameter accommodate standard tap holders and wrenches used in bench and drill-press operations. The 2.56-inch thread length provides adequate engagement for most standard fastener depths in the 1-1/4-7 UNC thread class. It is part of the Cleveland Series 1002 product line.
Designed for 1-1/4-7 UNC threading applications in alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and free-machining stainless steel workpieces where a plug-chamfer, straight-flute hand tap is specified.
This tap is installed by machinists using standard tap wrenches or T-handle tap holders; ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured before starting. Power down any associated machinery and clamp the workpiece firmly before hand-tapping operations begin. Apply a suitable cutting fluid or tapping compound to the tap and workpiece to reduce heat and improve thread quality. Do not force the tap — back off a quarter turn periodically to break chips and prevent tap breakage, particularly in blind holes.
