The CLEVELAND C54972 is a straight-flute hand tap designed for cutting 1-1/8-12 UNF threads in both blind and through-hole applications. It features a plug chamfer, right-hand thread direction, and a 4-flute geometry ground to an H4 thread limit with a 3B class of fit. The tap is manufactured from high speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, making it suitable for use without coolant-through capability. Overall length is 5.438 inches, with a thread length of 2.56 inches. Series 1002 construction is targeted at professional machinists and trade technicians who require accurate, repeatable thread form in production or repair environments.
This tap is used in metalworking and maintenance applications where fine unified threads are required on larger fastener sizes. The plug chamfer makes it well suited for starting threads in through-holes or partially threading blind holes where a bottom tap is not needed. Rated for use in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and free-machining stainless steel, it covers a wide range of common shop and field materials. The 0.896-inch shank diameter provides solid drive engagement in standard tap holders and wrenches.
Designed for blind hole and through-hole threading in a range of ferrous and non-ferrous metals including alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and free-machining stainless steel. Fits standard tap holders and wrenches sized for a 0.672-inch square drive.
Hand taps should be installed and driven by a qualified machinist or tooling technician using a properly sized tap wrench. Always secure the workpiece and ensure the starting hole is drilled to the correct tap drill diameter for a 1-1/8-12 UNF thread before tapping. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve thread quality. Back the tap off periodically during threading to break chips and prevent binding, particularly in blind hole applications.
