The CLEVELAND C54884 is a 7/8-9 UNC straight-flute hand tap designed for cutting internal threads in a range of ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, this 4-flute tap delivers reliable thread formation in both blind-hole and through-hole applications. The taper chamfer — 8 to 10 threads of lead — guides the tap into the hole progressively, reducing the force required to start the cut. With an overall length of 4.688 inches and a thread length of 2.22 inches, the C54884 is sized for typical hand-tapping setups in job shop, maintenance, and production environments. It is threaded to a Class 3B fit at an H4 thread limit, meeting tight-tolerance threading requirements.
This tap is suited for right-hand internal thread cutting in materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and free-machining stainless steel. The taper chamfer makes it appropriate as the starting tap in a hand-tap set sequence or as a standalone tap in through-hole work. The 0.697-inch shank diameter accommodates standard tap wrenches sized for 7/8 work. The 0.75-inch square drive end provides positive engagement with T-handle and straight-handle tap wrenches. Series 1001 identifies this as part of Cleveland's standard hand-tap line for UNC threads.

Installation is performed by machinists or maintenance technicians using a standard tap wrench sized for the 0.697-inch shank. Apply cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material to extend tap life and improve thread finish. Back the tap off periodically during cutting to break chips and prevent binding, particularly in blind holes.
